The Changing Nature of Trade on the Island of Ireland

Global and domestic developments have created new challenges and opportunities for traders across Ireland and Northern Ireland. This report, conducted for InterTradeIreland by EY, examines these developments.

The report examines trade patterns since 2016. Here are some of the key findings:

North-South Trade 

Total trade grew significantly from 2016 to 2022:

  • NI to IE trade value increased by 90%, driven by a 148% rise in services and a 75% increase in goods exports.
  • IE to NI trade value grew by 58%, with notable growth in goods (+53%) and services (+94%).

East-West Trade

  • NI to GB trade saw 11% growth, with a decline in goods (-10%) offset by a 73% rise in services.
  • IE to GB trade grew strongly in both goods (+31%) and services (+81%).

Sectoral Highlights

  • Significant growth in manufacturing, transportation, information & communications, and construction.

Services trade has been resilient, with growth outpacing goods in many areas.
