Need help classifying goods for import/export? This guide shows how to use TARIC to find the correct EU commodity code, check duties, VAT, and identify restrictions for Ireland and the EU.
Step 1: Understand What a Commodity Code Is
A commodity code (also known as a tariff code, HS code, or CN code) classifies your goods for import/export. It determines:
- The rate of duty and VAT you’ll pay.
- Whether import licenses are needed.
- If restrictions or reliefs apply.
Step 2: Use TARIC
The TARIC (Integrated Tariff of the European Union) is the official EU source:
- Search by product name, material, or use.
- Returns full commodity code with duties and regulations.
Step 3: Search by Keyword or Code
In TARIC:
- Enter a keyword.
- Refine results based on product attributes.
- Review the code structure:
-
- First 6 digits: Harmonized System (global)
- 8 digits: EU Combined Nomenclature (CN code)
- 10 digits: TARIC code (for EU duties and restrictions)
Step 4: Check Duties, VAT, and Restrictions
Once you find a code:
- Review duty rate.
- Confirm Irish VAT rate (standard is 23%, but varies).
- Look for anti-dumping duties, excise, or licensing.
In this short video Trade Advisor Christine Murray discusses the importance of commodity codes:
